How to Make a Bee-Friendly Garden

Bees are important pollinators that help our plants grow. Here are some tips on how to attract bees to your garden, no matter how big or small it is.

Grow Bee-Friendly Plants

Bees love flowers that are rich in nectar and pollen. Some good choices include:

  • Summer: lavender, agastache, foxgloves, goldenrod
  • Autumn: sedums, dahlias, Japanese anemones, autumn asters
  • Winter: snowdrops, winter aconites, ivy, hellebores
  • Spring: flowering cherry, crab apples, daffodils, grape hyacinth

Provide Nesting Sites

Bees need places to nest. You can provide bee hotels for solitary bees and bumblebee pots for bumblebees.

Relax on Weeding

Many weeds, such as clover and dandelions, are actually good for bees. So, don’t be too quick to weed them all out.

Help Tired Bees

If you see a tired bee, you can help it by mixing a sugar solution (equal parts warm water and sugar) and placing it near the bee’s head. The bee will drink the solution and get the energy it needs to keep going.

By following these tips, you can create a bee-friendly garden that will be buzzing with activity all season long.
